Bence Kalo is a Cardiff-based Hungarian opera & theatre director and movement director.

 

His credits include directing the Young Artist production of Engelbert Humperdinck's HANSEL & GRETEL (Opera Holland Park), ACIS & GALATEA by George Frederic Händel (Dorset Opera Festival) and  YAʼAKOBI & LEIDENTAL by Hanoch Levin (Etcetera Theatre, UK & The Cameri Theatre, Israel) and movement directing Gioachino Rossini's THE BARBER OF SEVILLE (Opera Holland Park) and A DOZEN THINGS I WOULD RATHER BE by Nick Ishmael-Perkins (Streatham Space Project).

Bence has worked as an Assistant Director at Glyndebourne, Scottish Opera, Opera Holland Park and Dorset Opera Festival, and has completed Observerships at the Royal Opera House and in the West End.

 

As a movement and stagecraft specialist, he has delivered workshops for the National Opera Studio, British Youth Opera, Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, Waterperry Opera Festival, and Dorset Opera Festival.

He trained at the École Jacques Lecoq in Paris (Two-year Professional Course and LEM – Laboratory of Movement Study) and holds an MA in Theatre Directing from the University of Kent. He has also worked with Ariane Mnouchkine as a student of her travelling school, École Nomade.

In addition to his creative practice, Bence has been an Associate Board Member of Buxton International Festival since November 2024. He was an Artistic Leadership Trainee and Artistic Associate at British Youth Opera between 2024 and 2025.

In 2023, he was a semi-finalist for the 13th European Opera Directing Prize.
